"The future of wireless is not just wireless, it is a part of life". When I was a teen-ager, I dreamed to have a mobile phone. But if we dream of the wireless picture in 2010, the story will be totally different. Why? Because at that time, the wireless infrastructure (not just for communications) will be totally multi-dimensional, whether in technologies (diversified and harmonized), applications (free mobile, local or global), or services (service/bandwidth on demand). Our wireless
personal communicator or assistant (the size of a wallet or up to a book with enough bandwidth and memory) can help us enjoy our lives. Wireless becomes easy and affordable in the mass market, even when you are away from your office; your business will never be off-line. The global roaming and high-speed wireless link (thanks to the tremendous silicon advancements) will make our travels wonderful and feel at home – life will be really beautiful.

The key applications evolved from the advancement of next-generation wireless, and the underlined technologies will surely dominate the whole communications market and therefore improve the business model in many aspects.

Convergence of wireless mobile, access and Internet will be the next storm in wireless communications. Fueled by many emerging technologies including super signal processing, software definable radio, intelligent antennas, superconductor devices as well as digital transceiver, the future wireless system will be much more compact with limited hardware entity and more flexible and intelligent software elements. Re-configurable and adaptive terminals and base stations helps the system easily applied in the wireless mobile as well as wireless access applications. The compact hardware and very small portion of basic software will go the way as the computer industries did in the past. A compact multi-dimensional broadband wireless model will be adopted for the system design and implementation.

Wireless Mobile Internet will be the key application of this converged next generation wireless system. The terminal will be very smart instead of dumb, compatible to mobile and access services including wireless multicasting as well as wireless trunking.

“3Gwireless and Beyond” was initiated by International Telecommunications Union (ITU) towards a global acceptance and standards for this great vision. ITU has been doing a very great job in pushing forward this effort and the real take-off of 3Gwireless implementation and deployment is just on the way.

Many people asked me the question, “What’s the drive to found this conference?”, my answer is “We think it a fun to welcome all the 3Gwireless fans to this valley, and enjoy the California sunshine as well as update our doings of this technology”. Same as the spirit of Silicon Valley, this conference is becoming one of the most important technical forums in evaluating the 3Gwireless and future emerging wireless technologies worldwide. Driven by the major industries,
this conference combines research, development, design, marketing and investment of 3Gwireless into one, and becomes most unique event in this huge 3Gwireless storm.

3Gwireless deployment faces a little bit delay, just because we are going to prepare a big take-off. By 2005, only in China there will be over 200M mobile users and most will be evolved to 3G.

By organizing this conference, we can share our experiences and expertise face-to-face where lots of ideas and business come out just in a couple of seconds – this is again the spirit of Silicon Valley.

San Francisco Bay Area is always one of the best places in the world (good Fengsui in Chinese) for start-up, grow-up and wrap-up of high-tech waco. You can always find people on the street to talk about technologies and keep your brain running faster.

Sorry, my know-how has not been updated since this Monday. Let’s listen to our 3Gwireless leaders about their newest updates.

Welcome to San Francisco and California.
