USCWC Released World's First OWA
Baseband IP Core for 4G Mobile Smartphone

San Francisco, 23 October 2007
--
The future wireless and mobile communications will be shifted from the traditional transmission-specific
radio technology to the interface-based technology to be able to converge with the computer system architecture. Such future mobile device is first, a computer, then an open wireless architecture (OWA) terminal system which offers an optimal solution to open up the wireless platform from physical layer to the middle layers and support the service-oriented architecture and infrastructure in the upper layers of the next generation mobile terminal development.
An open baseband processing architecture of the OWA mobile terminal design provides an optimal solution to manage the baseband processing tasks for the next generation mobile communication terminals integrating and converging different wireless standards based on the open wireless architecture technologies.
The OWA baseband processing architecture has the capability to support Open Services Architecture (OSA) including, open application program interface (OAPI), service convergence, open mobile operating systems, quality of service (QoS), session controls, mobility management, security, media conversion and user defined services. The open services architecture is a very important open service platform supporting different services and applications (both existing and future defined) of different wireless standards by various service providers so that the same open terminal can simultaneously or selectively access to different wireless networks in the user’s service geographic region.
This OWA SoC IP core is very important for
developing the next generation (such as 4th generation) mobile
Smartphone platforms including iPhone, Google Phone, iPAQ,
Blackberry and other models where the openness, simplicity and
mobile Internet become the emerging requirements of the system
architecture and product definition.

4GMF® will launch global 4G mobile standardization initiating
from China regions
4G supports Open Wireless
Architecture (OWA) which is a big movement from 3G
technology

Shanghai, 30 October 2006 —
Over 100 top experts and executives agreed at GMC'05 Beijing
that, 3G did not fundamentally improve the 2G
architecture, and therefore it becomes the
transitional solution only. Lessons from ISDN
(Integrated Service Digital Networks) twenty years ago,
China is very careful in deploying the 3G networks and
looking for new technology in driving the beyond 3G
mobile communication industry.
Besides China Moon mission, one of the most
important special programs is to construct an
open-architecture based broadband wireless
(including mobile) communication system to meet the
nation’s future ICT infrastructure development. Same
as open computer architecture in the computer
industry and open network architecture in the
Internet era, the
wireless industry is rapidly transitioning from
proprietary and closed architecture to more
flexible, extensible, cost effective Open Wireless
Architecture (OWA) systems. This transition is
creating interesting challenges for developers,
manufacturers, integrators, operators and end-users
as they wrestle with complexities of open wireless
systems.
As stated in the OECD (Organization of Economy,
Cooperation and Development) report, “As too many wireless systems come out every day,
the current closed architecture and proprietary
systems do not bode well for its success”,
therefore open wireless architecture platform will
definitely drive the future wireless and mobile
communications.
Fourth Generation (4G) mobile communication will
basically focus on the Open Wireless Architecture (OWA),
and Cost-effective and Spectrum-efficient High-speed
wireless mobile transmission. The 3G system suffers
tremendously worldwide because it did not fundamentally
improve the wireless architecture, and making the
architecture open is the final solution in the wireless
industry.
"Based on the China specific
situation, history, culture and development unbalance,
3G will not be successful as expected which I pointed
out early at WWC'2000 in San Francisco", said Prof.
Willie W. Lu, an independent special advisor for several
China 4G administrations and chairman of Fourth
Generation Mobile Forum®
(4GMF®), "OWA is the
only solution to move China forward to the next level of
success in this industry so that the future mobile
phone, like the computer, can be DIY (Do-It-Yourself) -
a 100% consumer product".
China is on the way to evolve from a
"Made-in-China" country to a "Developed-in-China"
country by year 2020, and 2007 is a global year of 4G
initialization because ITU WRC'2007 will launch the 4G
program as well as spectrum allocation of the industry.
As per China long-term development plan in ICT
(Information and Communication Technology), the China
initial 4G networks will be deployed in early 2012, and
the 4G industrial standards will dominate in this
emerging market.
The mission and objective of 4GMF®
is to define the 4G mobile standards and boost the 4G
innovations in China as well as the region. With global
operation centers in San Francisco, Shanghai and Geneva,
4GMF® is technically backed up by World Wireless
Congress®, Global Mobile Congress® and World Mobile
Congress® across the global. Around 50 Fortune 500
companies and around 20 countries are working with 4GMF®
to reshape the mobile communication future.
4GMF®
will present its China 4G standardization strategy at
the upcoming
ITU Telecom World 2006 in Hong Kong within
Session: DE-G The Promise of advanced wireless
services.
The 4G-OWA technical white paper is
published in ITU at

Palo Alto, Calif., January 4th, 2005
/DG/ -- Delson Group Worldwide, a worldly prominent R&D body in next generation wireless and mobile communication technologies, today officially announced the special research and development project on "Open Wireless Architecture (OWA)" in its Silicon Valley research center as well as the global centers in East Asia and Europe.
"The wireless industry is rapidly transitioning from proprietary architecture to more flexible, cost effective open architecture systems. This transition is creating interesting challenges for developers, manufacturers, integrators, operators and end-users as they wrestle with complexities of open wireless systems." said Prof. Willie W. LU, chief architect and executive director of U.S. Center for Wireless Communications, and consulting professor of Stanford University, "OWA will eventually become the global industry leading solution to integrate various wireless air-interfaces into one wireless open terminal where the same end equipment can flexibly work in the wireless access domains as well as in the mobile cellular networks. As mobile terminal (rather than wireline phone) will become the most important communicator in future, this single equipment with single number and multiple air-interfaces (powered by OWA) will definitely dominate the wireless communication industries."
OWA defines the open interfaces in wireless networks and systems, including base-band signal processing parts, RF parts, networking parts, and OS and application parts, so that the system can support different industrial standards and integrate the various wireless networks into an open broadband platform. For comparison, Software Defined Radio (SDR) is only a radio in which the operating parameters including
inter alia frequency range, modulation type, and/or output power limitations can be set or altered by software. Therefore, SDR is just one of the implemental modules of the OWA system.
Fourth Generation (4G) mobile communication will basically focus on the Open Wireless Architecture, and Cost-effective and Spectrum-efficient High-speed wireless mobile transmission. The 3G system suffers tremendously worldwide because it did not fundamentally improve the wireless architecture, and making the architecture open is the final solution in the wireless industry.
OWA R&D is very timely and significant because open wireless systems and networks are becoming the driving solution for next generation wireless and mobile communications, especially ITU WRC’2007 will announce officially the post IMT2000 project where is well expected to focus on open architecture and shared spectrum strategies. In addition, open wireless platform to support various standards and modes are becoming the industrial trends on the worldwide basis. As of December 30, 2004, there are over 1000 research projects involved in global OWA development.
OWA research and development is funded by "Mission 2020" R&D Plan -
funding the future.
